Laptop-Screen-Inverter

http://www.articledashboard.com/Article/Laptop-Screen-Inverter/5282
The small piece of circuit board, which is usually located underneath the plastic shell of your laptop’s screen casing, is probably the cause of one of the most common problems related to screen failure and, more specifically, dimness, or darkness to the screen itself.

The main purpose of the inverter is basically to give power to the backlight. The way it works is simple, it takes power from the laptop itself by a small inverter lead that runs from the motherboard of the laptop, sometimes it is a direct lead on it’s own, other times this lead can be connected into the inverter through the LCD cable (the lead that runs from the motherboard to the back of the screen itself), giving the screen its visual display.

At one end of the inverter, usually the left end, the lead that gives it power is plugged into a small white socket and from the other end, usually the right side, the backlight lead from the screen is plugged into another white socket. The backlight is a very small, thin, long, very delicate light bulb that runs along the very bottom or sometimes the side of the screen.

The problems related to the inverter is dimness or darkness to the screen in most cases or flickering of the backlight. Sometimes it can stop the screen form working at all but not usually. A common fault with laptop screens is a dark or dim screen, generally it is assumed that it is the backlight that is at fault, sometimes this may be correct, however more often or not it is simply the inverter not working, or not giving the backlight the power it needs. The inverter is usually cheaper to replace than the backlight, as the backlight is very fragile and can be easily broken. On some occasions a repair of the inverter is possible, although usually labour charges on fixing the inverter can sometimes lead up to being more expensive than simply replacing it.

When it comes to purchasing an inverter most companies will require the part number which is usually printed on a bar code on the outside of the inverter but sometimes you may need to look carefully to find it. If your lucky then you may get away with just stating what your laptop make and model is, for example ‘I have an IBM Thinkpad T22 and I need an inverter’, we try our hardest to locate the inverter with just these details, however sometimes you will need to provide the part number; here is an example of a part number from the inverter for an IBM Thinkpad T22, (10L1402). This inverter is also compatible with the IBM T21, and T20 all three laptops as a whole are basically the same apart from the processor.

US agent among two dead in Florida prison gunfight

Wed Jun 21, 2006 12:18pm ET13

By Michael Peltier

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - A federal agent and a prison guard were shot dead and another worker was injured in a gunfight during an arrest attempt at a federal detention center in north Florida on Wednesday, the FBI said.

Federal agents were trying to arrest six prison guards on corruption charges, including charges that some gave prisoners alcohol and other contraband in exchange for sex and money, an investigator said.

One of the guards targeted for arrest opened fire and was shot dead, FBI spokesman Jeff Westcott said. An agent from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General was also killed, he said.

Another prison worker was also shot and taken to a hospital, where his or her condition was unknown, Westcott said.

Prison spokeswoman Carla Wilson said no prisoners were involved and the facility had been secured.

The six guards were indicted on Tuesday on charges of conspiracy, bribery, witness tampering and mail fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in Tallahassee.

The suspects had conspired for nearly three years to trade contraband for money and other payment, and would face 20 years in prison if convicted, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

The detention center is one of two federal prisons located in the Florida state capital and is used for short-term incarcerations. It is located next to the Federal Correctional Institution, a long-term detention facility.

Integrity and flexibility top the insurer's list of desirable employee

http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/mar2005/bs20050331_6543_bs052.htm
Q: How do you decide where to recruit?
A:
I'm most involved with the Corporate Development and Finance Development programs. They each have a two-year schedule that includes a rotation based on the needs of the employee. The Corporate Participants are all going to have an accelerated learning process within one of our functional areas, be it sales, underwriting, or claims. [This] allows them to really understand the insurance business.

We have good relationships with a number of Boston-area MBA programs. We also draw talent from a number of top-tier programs, including the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Georgetown University's Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business, Yale University School of Management, Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business, and MIT Sloan School of Management.

Q: What do you look for in a candidate?
A:
We place a high value on operating with integrity. Clearly, we're looking for individuals who fit that mold. We're not interested in an MBA who's going to come in throwing elbows. We want candidates who are prepared to work in team environments, who understand excellence in execution, or the ability to identify business drivers and their implications, as well as customer service. Those are key elements of how we do business.

Q: What kind of advice do you offer an MBA who wants to get hired at Liberty Mutual?
A:
We're interested in people who have geographic flexibility upon finishing the programs. We're an organization with close to 900 U.S. locations. Our regional operations, many of which are stand-alone small businesses, need managers. The more geographic flexibility you have, the more career options you will have.

Q: I understand that each of these positions has a sponsor within the organization. What does that mean?
A:
Both of these programs are sponsored by senior management. CEO Ted Kelly sponsors the Corporate Management Development program and interviews every candidate. Our CFO, Dennis Langwell, sponsors and interviews every one of the Finance Development candidates.

Each participant has an executive-level sponsor. These are all individuals who report to the CEO or the head of commercial market. The sponsor maintains personal oversight of the participant's progress, meets with [him or her] regularly, gets to know [his or her] particular goals, and tries to anticipate where that individual might fit into the organization.

Why Credit Cards Expire

Why Does A Credit Card Expire and How Do You Renew It?

Besides the long string of numbers that identify your account, there is a short little series of numbers that makes up your card's expiration date. Most of us don't even pay any attention to that date, but you can bet that the credit card approval network knows exactly when your card expires, and for good reason. Actually, there are several reasons, so let's take a look.

Top Reasons Why a Credit Card Has an Expiration Date

One of the most simple and uncomplicated reasons the credit card will expire is that the magnetic strip will not last forever. Although the plastic card itself is virtually indestructible, the magnetic strip is a little touchier and will eventually wear out. When that happens your card will no longer be readable by credit card terminals and ATMs.

Some institutions use an expiration date as a way of reconnecting with the cardholder. It gives the company and the user the opportunity to get together and discuss any issues or complaints that the customer may have. It also allows the card company to appear to care about you as a customer. They will send you a friendly reminder, kindly offering you the chance to renew with your same comfortable company. With all the competition out there, comfort and history can go a long way in keeping customers.

Cardholder security is another reason. This allows the company to check up on you and make sure you are who you say you are and nothing has changed. With identity theft being what it is today, this is a good thing. Some people have had credit cards opened in their names without their knowledge and charges have been made. If the card expires, the company will contact you and possibly warn you about current fraud trends.

The company may use the expiration date as a way to remind you they are there. For people who don't use their cards very often, this can be a gentle reminder of just what's in their wallet and, hopefully, remind you to use it.

Nearing The Expiration Date

It is actually quite easy to renew your card. About a month before your current card actually expires, a new one will suddenly appear in the mail to replace your expired one. This is great if you're in town. If you are going to be traveling, check your card before you go. If it will expire before you get back, call ahead and get your new one before you leave.

Once you have your new card, read the material that came with it. This may very well include a list of new and improved terms. If you find these terms to be new, but not improved, contact the card company. Do not use the card until you have received verification that the terms have been changed to your approval. If they refuse, you can always cancel the card. Trust me, it won't take long to find a replacement.

Cell technology beyond games

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/09/technology/08cnd-blue.html

I.B.M. demonstrated two such applications at a gathering in New York today. One was to blend satellite photographs with geological data on landscape contours and elevation data. The result was to be able to do a simulated "flyover," shifting the perspective by moving a joystick, of Mount Rainier in Washington.

Another was to assemble multiple scans inside the body. Three-dimensional images that would have taken minutes or longer to render, even at hospital centers, were presented almost instantly with the Cell technology. Analysts said the Cell systems open the door to using real-time imaging technology during patient consultations or during surgery.

The Cell-based server computers will be available this summer. The machines, an I.B.M. official said, will be priced at $25,000 to $35,000, while full-fledged supercomputers can cost millions of dollars.

The Cell servers will run mostly on the Linux operating system, which is popular in high-performance computing. I.B.M. plans to make the Cell technology widely available to universities and software companies interested in developing applications that will run on Cell chips.

"We want to see how far we can take Cell technology beyond games, and the biggest challenge to making that work is the software tools for building new applications," said William M. Zeitler, senior vice president for I.B.M.'s systems and technology group.

Visualization can provide a picture of a massive amount of information, often enabling a human user to absorb and understand more information rapidly. That is the practical reason for applications from medical imaging for physicians to terrain mapping for fighter pilots.

Video games work on much the same principle. More and more of computing, according to I.B.M. researchers, may be presented visually to users in the future. "We're hoping that this gaming stuff will get us to the next level of user interfaces," said James A. Kahle, the chief technologist for Cell systems and an I.B.M. research fellow.

That may be only a hope today, but industry analysts say the Cell approach looks promising. "If you see the future of computing as "give me the answer now,' it favors something like Cell, a computer platform designed for photorealistic modeling," said Richard Doherty, president of Envisioneering, a technology research firm.

organic light-emitting diode (OLED)

The biggest technical problem left to overcome has been the limited lifetime of the devices. Red and green OLED elements already had lifetimes of well over 20,000 hours but blue OLED lifetimes had lagged significantly behind. However, in May 2005, Cambridge Display Technology announced a blue OLED with a lifetime of over 100,000 hours and 100 cd/m². Unfortunately, according to the CDT press release "Lifetimes for devices made using the new blue materials at 200cd/m², 300cd/m² and 400cd/m² are greater than 25,000 hours, 10,000 hours and 6,000 hours respectively". 400 cd/m² is the brightness of LCD panels currently on the market.

According to Kodak, which is developing small molecule OLED, lifetime problems are not so significant for that type of OLED, mainly as a result of doping the base material of the OLEDs, which, they claim, has led to much better device performance both electrically and optically. Universal Display for example have produced a blue OLED that has a lifetime of 10,000 hours. There are still a number of problems to overcome though. One of these is intrusion of water into displays which damages and destroys the organics. Therefore, improved sealing processes are important for practical manufacturing. Also, efficient outcoupling of waveguided light within the substrates is an area of continued research.

Commercial development of the technology is also restrained by patents held by Kodak and other firms, requiring other companies to acquire a license. In the past, many display technologies have become widespread only once the patents had expired; aperture grille CRT is a classic example.
