organic light-emitting diode (OLED)
The biggest technical problem left to overcome has been the limited lifetime of the devices. Red and green OLED elements already had lifetimes of well over 20,000 hours but blue OLED lifetimes had lagged significantly behind. However, in May 2005, Cambridge Display Technology announced a blue OLED with a lifetime of over 100,000 hours and 100 cd/m². Unfortunately, according to the CDT press release "Lifetimes for devices made using the new blue materials at 200cd/m², 300cd/m² and 400cd/m² are greater than 25,000 hours, 10,000 hours and 6,000 hours respectively". 400 cd/m² is the brightness of LCD panels currently on the market.
According to Kodak, which is developing small molecule OLED, lifetime problems are not so significant for that type of OLED, mainly as a result of doping the base material of the OLEDs, which, they claim, has led to much better device performance both electrically and optically. Universal Display for example have produced a blue OLED that has a lifetime of 10,000 hours. There are still a number of problems to overcome though. One of these is intrusion of water into displays which damages and destroys the organics. Therefore, improved sealing processes are important for practical manufacturing. Also, efficient outcoupling of waveguided light within the substrates is an area of continued research.
Commercial development of the technology is also restrained by patents held by Kodak and other firms, requiring other companies to acquire a license. In the past, many display technologies have become widespread only once the patents had expired; aperture grille CRT is a classic example.

iPod Nano's rechargeable battery, hidden inside its sealed case, can't be easily replaced by users. Apple charges $59 for battery replacement -- although by the time any iPod Nano will need that service, after a few hundred discharge-and-recharge cycles, Apple will probably be selling versions that store 20 or 30 gigabytes of music.

株式会社スクウェア・エニックスは、第62回ヴェネチア国際映画祭の「アウトオブコンペティション部門」にて、映像作品「ファイナルファンタジーVII アドベントチルドレン」の上映会を8月31日(現地時間)に開催した。
まず上映会に先駆け、ディレクターの野村哲也氏、プロデューサーの橋本真司氏、クラウド役の櫻井孝宏さん、ティファ役の伊藤歩さんの4人が会見を実施。この中で野村氏は、「2年の歳月をかけて理想とするものに近づけることに努力した。今後、ゲーム制作の予定が立て込んでいるが、タイミングが合えば、またぜひ映像作品を創っていきたい」と話している。
また橋本氏は、「当初は20分の短編作品となる予定だったが、製作過程で予定の5倍にも及ぶ大作に成長した。今回、非常に密度の濃いエンタテインメント作品を制作できたので、今後もCGを駆使した新しい作品を出していきたい」と今後に向けての意欲を語った。
同日深夜に実施された上映会には、4人のほかにCGディレクターの野末武志氏、シナリオライターの野島一成氏も来場。同映画祭ディレクターのマルコ・ミューラー氏の出迎えを受けた。上映後の観客からは、「とてもセンセーショナルで感動した」、「CGで創られながらもタイヘンヒューマニティあふれる素晴らしいストーリー展開」といった感想も寄せられている。

The State Department said offers of help had been received from:
Australia, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
International organizations also offered help ranging from medical teams to tents to cash donations. They include NATO, the Organization of American States, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Health Organization.
A State Department official said a needs assessment was being done to determine which offers would be accepted.
The United Nations has offered to help coordinate international relief. Following is a list of some of the aid offered by governments.
Asia
AUSTRALIA: "We're going to provide A$10 million ($7.6 million) and the bulk of that money, if not all of it, will go to the American Red Cross," said Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer. The Australian government said there may be up to 24 Australians trapped in Louisiana in the aftermath of Katrina.
CHINA: China offered $5 million in aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina which devastated the Gulf Coast ahead of President Hu Jintao's U.S. visit. If needed, the Chinese government is also prepared to send rescue workers, including medical experts, officials said.
JAPAN: Will provide $200,000 to the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on Friday. Japan will also identify needs in affected regions via the U.S. government and will provide up to $300,000 in emergency supplies such as tents, blankets and power generators if it receives requests for such assistance, the ministry said.
SINGAPORE: The Singapore Armed Forces, responding to requests by the United States Texas Army National Guard, has sent three Chinook helicopters to Fort Polk, Louisiana, to help in relief efforts. The government said the Chinooks will help to ferry supplies and undertake airlift missions.
SOUTH KOREA: Has pledged aid and is waiting for a U.S. response, a government official said. "We have sent our intention to offer recovery aid," a Foreign Ministry official said on Friday.
SRI LANKA: Will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross.

劇場版が好調な「機動戦士Zガンダム」のクワトロ・バジーナ大尉と言えばあのサングラス。オレも着用して「君を笑いに来た」とか何とか言い放ってみたいもんだが、そもそもどこに売っているのか──というITニュータイプ戦士に朗報だ。
徳間書店の月刊アニメ雑誌「アニメージュ」編集部が運営する「通販アニメージュ」でこのほど、「クワトロ・バジーナ サングラス」の注文受け付けが始まった。価格は2万9000円（税込み）。
試作品 （C）創通エージェンシー・サンライズ
劇場版の公開を記念して制作した。デザインは出渕裕氏、監修は富野由悠季氏。サイドにキャスバル・レム・ダイクンの頭文字「C・D」のロゴマークを刻印した。
めがね工房 KAMUROが制作に協力する。製品版の制作過程は、めがね工房KAMUROのサイトに順次掲載する。
発送は、「機動戦士ZガンダムII 恋人たち」が公開される10月下旬ごろ。

Return to flight scrubbed
Today's Return to Flight launch of Space Shuttle Discovery has been postponed due to an issue with a low-level fuel cutoff sensor onboard the vehicle. The sensor protects an orbiter's main engines by triggering them to shut down in the event fuel runs unexpectedly low.
Eileen Collins is the commander for the Return to Flight mission and leads an international crew of six astronauts. Discovery is set for a 12-day flight to deliver equipment and supplies to the International Space Station. The STS-114 mission comes after a two and a half year initiative to reinforce the orbiters and improve the safety of the Space Shuttle fleet.
